A few days ago I posted a photo on instagram (essie_button) of some books on my bookshelf & a lot of you said you'd like me to do a post about them/the rest of the stuff on there.
These books came from my high school years & they're still some of my favourites today.
I have a really terrible memory (you'll know this if you watched my 50 Random Facts About Me video) so I' m going to do my best at describing these books with a little help from the interwebz to jog my memory. I'm just going to briefly go over a few of my favourites.
This was one of those books I couldn't seem to put down. It tells the true story of a girl named Cupcake who becomes orphaned at age 11. She is exposed to terrible living conditions and eventually runs away into the world of drugs, gangsters & hustling. Do you think she can get out of that life & make a change? Read it, y'all!
The book starts off with James waking up on a plane covered in bruises with absolutely no idea what has happened for the two weeks before this journey. He's been an alcoholic/drug addict for a decade and his family takes him to a rehabilitation centre. He takes a journey back through his life & it's absolutely mesmerising in my opinion.

This book stirred up a hell of a lot of controversy after he was featured on Oprah & claimed every detail in this book was factual. It turns out that a lot of this book is actually fictional which made Oprah VERY upset. She later apologized for her "lack of compassion" (see that interview here) but I'm sure the whole thing was great for sales of the book considering even I wanted to see what all of the drama was about!

If you still want more after reading this, My Friend Leonard begins where A Million Little Pieces left off. I really liked reading this book too but it's not AS compelling as his first book.
You can probably see a theme here-I LOVE memoirs and books based on people's real experiences. This book was and still is really popular, but considering I'm not a *huge* Red Hot Chili Peppers fan I didn't think I'd like this as much as I did. I consider this to be one of my favourite books of all time. I even rock out to a lil' Slow Cheetah every now and then, but I digress.

Anthony reflects upon his childhood, teenage years, sex/drugs/rock & roll & the history of the band itself. Not just for his fans, this book is just as charismatic as Anthony himself and is completely uncensored.
This book was recommended to me by Aslan when we first started dating. I was really nervous to read it because I HATE scary books, but I'd consider this book to be more "dark" than scary.
In short, it tells the story of a young man who takes on the job of a perfumer. He is in pursuit of a very *particular* scent and will not stop until he gets it. It's so beautifully written with gorgeous descriptions. This one isn't for everyone, but I really enjoyed reading it.
I had to read this book in high school which would usually lead to me HATING a book but I still really, really love it! It deals with social and moral issues but is there's a lot of warmth to this novel which gave it a loveable edge. I've written one too many essays on this book so check wikipedia for more information.
Of course I have lots of knick-knacks everywhere. Just a few old boxes, jars & a keepsake from India. I'm also channeling my inner Walter White with a scientific beaker.
These are *some* of my favourite movies & of course the AMAZING Six Feet Under box set.
Have you seen any of these? Love them as much as I do?
The skull is from a store called The Turquoise Door in Austin, Texas. Aslan got one too while we were on our American road trip! We couldn't resist!
I'm a bit of a hoarder, but I just like having the things I love on display. I'm trying to read more (when I'm not reading my university textbooks) so if you have any book recommendations I'd LOVE to hear about them!
